CATS I KNOW: NIC WILSON.

Nic Wilson is one of my favourite people. By day he is the lead guitarist in indie-rock band British India, by night he moonlights as an aspiring filmmaker. Actually, he technically plays music by night and makes films by day… but you geddit. He is the type of person who is always reading something cooler than you – except once, when he was reading “Fev” – and he is such an excellent musician that it kind of makes me want to give up. Somewhere between all that (if you want to be precise, I believe it was between Perth and Scarborough), he has the time to fill in questionnaires I write, 99% for my own amusement. And don’t I just love to ask the big questions. This is super hard-hitting – you’ve been warned.

RE: Fill in the blanks

Hello, my name is NIC WILSON. I am a SAINTS FAN from WAY BACK.

You might know me from MY BAND, BRITISH INDIA or maybe even YOUR NIGHTMARES.

In my spare time I enjoy WATCHING FILMS VARYING FROM MEDIOCRE TO AWFUL, however I can often be found doing AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE as well.

I am notorious for BEING SHY and a hidden talent I have is UNTYING KNOTS.

SILENT BOB is how some people describe me, but I would tell them to GO F%^&* THEMSELVES.

My favourite moment this year was when “SURVIVOR” STARTED AGAIN.

SAX SOLO’S are something that generally piss me off but I do get a fuzzy feeling when I see BEAGLES AT THE AIRPORT.

WERNER HERZOG is my lifelong hero. If we met, I would ask him about ADOPTING ME.

I feel like “JACKANINNY” is a word that doesn’t get used often enough.

The best advice I have ever been given is “NO ONE REALLY KNOWS WHAT ‘GOOD’ IS, SO ALWAYS GO IN WITH NO CHINKS IN THE ARMOUR AND MAKE THEM BELIEVE IT’S GOOD…” – GEORGE YOUNG.

The song I am most proud of writing is “NOWHERE BOYS” and my favourite one to play live is “BLACK & WHITE RADIO” AS IT HERALDS THE END OF THE SET.

My favourite YouTube video is “GIRL WITH A LEEK” – PERHAPS NOT MY FAVOURITE, BUT GETS OVER THE LINE FOR SHEER VOLUME OF PLAYS.

NOODLE KINGDOM is overrated.

I would like to shamelessly self-promote MY PRODUCTION COMPANY, “CAREFUL STRANGER(S)”. You can find out more about it here.

WARDROBE TOUR.

There is something so awkwardly self-involved about having a style blog. It makes me cringe so much my ribs hurt sometimes, usually when I’m sifting through my camera looking for the most aesthetically-pleasing, flattering photo of myself to spread across the internet like the attention-whore I deep down fear I am, or when I’m worrying about whether the fashion industry is sucking my soul dry.*

I was planning to do an outfit post “photoshoot” (a term I use lightly) over the weekend when all these self-questioning thoughts started overwhelming me and I suddenly chickened out.

I’m not sure why I’m telling you about my most inward fears about the psychological complexities of blogging, but it sure makes an unusual introduction to what is – and I’m not sure if this is more or less self-involved than an outfit post – a small glimpse into my wardrobe and some of my favourite recent acquisitions.

The rate at which I acquire ‘new things’ is alarming at the best of times, but I like to put it down to the fact I work in online fashion marketing, and really, what can I expect? Shopping is… part of my job. Not really, but you know. That’s how I sleep at night. I’m certainly not blowing disproportionate, ugly amounts of cash on designer duds – I’m actually super thrifty – but what can I say? I like clothes. I’m also nosy by nature. I enjoy stealing peeks at people’s personal environments, and maybe you will too. So onwards!

{Left: Mint lace top from H&M; Pale pink shorts from Bardot / My bedside table}

{Mixed jewellery, Michael Kors watch, Chanel & Chloe perfumes; twenty-seven names brooch; “Sweet pea” Diptyque candle; postcards of cats that I bought in Paris; a collection of stories I will eventually read}

{My wardrobe rainbow}

{My personal stylist and best friend, Indi}

{Hats, shoes & necklaces currently on high rotation}

{My favourite vintage tee’s. All on their last legs but I refuse to let them go… ever}

SPRING THING.

Just some things I wouldn’t mind owning in my wardrobe right now. Kind of all about the ‘jacquard’ trend at the moment – I love how opulent and shimmery the texture can be. I love the idea of cute little pastel jacquard high-waisted shorts with a flattering roomy fit, and puffball skirts in molten gold tones. And although I’m not a huge fan of the pastel denim trend, I wouldn’t say no to this cat print by JW Anderson for Topshop. Anyone else noticed how cats are having a fashion moment right now? I’m spotting cat prints everywhere. Not complaining of course.

STYLE CRUSH: SUZY BISHOP.

{Images from ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ via Google Image}

“This is Suzy Bishop. She likes stories with magical powers in them. From time to time, she goes berserk.”

I never thought I’d be doing a “Style Crush” post on a fictional 12-year-old girl, but I guess that was before “Moonrise Kingdom” entered my life and with it, the charming Suzy Bishop who inhabits a whimsical world of dreams, fantasy and young love – all set to a highly stylised 1960s backdrop that could only be conjured up by the imagination of Wes Anderson.

Awkwardly adorable, Suzy’s penchant for terrible blue eyeshadow, Francoise Hardy records, short skirts and knee high socks is more than charming, as are the two possessions she is never seen without; her binoculars and her kitten.

I’ve never coveted the wardrobe of a 12-year-old so much before. All those gorgeous shades of tangerine and lemon, perfect A-line frocks, oversized peter pan collars and cuffs – it’s a vintage heaven. It’s also one of my new favourite films – it reminded me of what it would be like to watch a children’s story book in motion – and it’s absolutely guaranteed to steal your heart away.
