Make-up is one of the first things I notice about a person. I guess, just like your outfit, it can speak volumes about who you are. So when the team at Dr.Lewinn’s asked me about personal discovery, I thought this would be the perfect thing!

For the longest time, my beauty look has been pretty unchanged – long hair, long fringe, exaggerated cat-eye eyeliner and the occasional pop colour lip…

I think it’s probably the association with rock and roll, the 60s and 70s and the timelessness of this look that I love so much. When I think of teased hair and smoky eyes, I instantly think sequins, leather and lace, late nights and loud music. I think of everyone from Brigitte Bardot and Anna Karina to Kate Moss, Alexa Chung and Sienna Miller. All ultra glam goddesses with that little bit – or lot of – edge.

It was definitely when I was growing up and flicking through the pages of magazines and watching old movies that I saw these style icons and instantly knew that was who I wanted to channel.

Though I’ve worn this look (and not with nearly the same amount of glamour nor edge) since I can remember, over time I have definitely worked on finessing the application! (And I cringe when I look at photos of 15-year-old panda-eyed me).

It’s probably only since I have gotten older that I’ve realised the importance of a) purchasing quality products over quantity, and b) looking after yourself. Good skin is literally the foundation to a good beauty regime. Now I always take the time to cleanse, moisturise, sunscreen and prime, before I even apply the first lick of makeup.

Before bed it’s a similar routine. I ensure all of the day’s makeup and grime is removed and a night eye cream, night moisturiser and serum are all applied. After all, it’s during the night that your skin rejuvenates cells the most. Plus, I want to be one of those ridiculous women who have amazing skin, even at 90.

When people see a beautiful woman, what is one of the most common things they will comment on? “Oh, she just glowed!”

I may not be glowing just yet, but when you have the right base, all you need is a touch of foundation, a dab of highlighter and a flick of liquid eyeliner and you have yourself one pretty impactful look. Oh, and looking like Alexa Chung doesn’t hurt.

Fashion, Inspiration, Style Crushing

November 30, 2014

Sometimes I think I want to grow my fringe out. Then I look at all of the images I have saved on my hard drive of the women, style and eras that inspire me and I think, “Shut the fuck up Sam. What are you even talking about?”

This post is an absolute mixed bag, but lately I have been feeling like I’ve been sucked up into the shininess of the high street and chain stores and contemporary labels (nothing wrong with any of the above, by the way) so I needed to get a dose of the inspiration that really grabs me by the heart strings. We’ve got some classic Pattie Boyd, Francoise Hardy, Jean Shrimpton, Penelope Tree, Anita Pallenberg, etc, in this post and a whole heap of 60s and 70s rock and roll glamour that I love, oh so very, very much. Enjoy!

Fashion blogs used to be my main source of style inspiration but lately it’s been overtaken by Instagram. I guess it’s the ease and convenience of just checking my phone during a busy day and getting – let’s face it – a lot of content that gets posted on blogs anyway. Ironically enough, I thought it’d be a good idea to share some of my favourite Instagram fashion girls to follow with you here. On my blog. Hmmm…

So my “Following” list is predominantly made up of girls with excellent wardrobes. The latest addition is British singer Whinnie Williams, who I’m besotted with for obvious reasons; she has an incredible 60s mod girl look, plenty of super cute animal friends and did I mention her amazing 60s mod girl look? She’s Edie Sedgwick meets Brigitte Bardot meets Pattie Boyd – all my fave style icons with a modern twist. Love love love. I suddenly have the urge to go vintage shopping and listen to The Beatles. Hey Whinnie, I think we should be BFFs 4eva.

Style Crushing

January 8, 2014

I am obsessed with Rachel Zoe. There, I said it. I watch her show on repeat, never get tired of seeing her incredible outfits (honestly I prefer the way she dresses herself over her clients) and basically dream of being her when I grow up. I can think of no other single person in the world whose wardrobe inspires me more and that’s a big call coming from someone who stares at fashion all day, every day. Her style is classic, chic, pretty much monochromatic with a huge splash of gold bling, and very vintage-inspired. The absolute epitome of the word ‘glamorous’, it’s no wonder her home is equally as beautiful and luxurious and is what has also been inspiring me lately. I’ll take it all, please.

If there is one blogger whose style I think is inimitable, I would say it’s Finnish blogger Sandra Hagelstam from ‘5 Inch & Up’. I think it was the sudden cool weather we experienced today in the middle of a Melbourne summer that made me think of her, since most of her outfit posts show an incredible, art-like ability to layer and play with proportion and silhouette. Sandra’s look is always effortlessly polished, always complex yet never overdone.

With a flawless wardrobe, which seems to be full of runway-to-reality pieces, the most incredible shoe collection and with a very unique Scandinavian signature I find her blog very inspiring. So many nice coats. So much beautiful blonde hair.
